Due to a specification of the medium-voltage directive “Power generation plants on medium-voltage grids” (“Erzeugungsanlagen am Mittelspannungsnetz”), solar plants in Germany up to and including 100 kilowatt-peak must be remote-controlled in order to reduce the feed-in capacity.

For PV systems with planned grid management, SMA recommends wired communication. This ensures that the grid operator has access to the PV system at all times.
For remote-controlled reduction in feed-in power, SMA offers the Power Reducer Box.
A 3-meter pre-assembled cable for connection to the radio ripple control receiver is enclosed with the Power Reducer Box.
If the cable is longer than 3 meters, erroneous interpretations of the switch signals which lead to a reduction in power cannot be ruled out, although the energy supplier has not sent a request to reduce power.
