Electrically Qualified Persons

The information provided in knowledge articles of the SMA Online Service Center are generally intended for PV professionals (photovoltaic professionals), electrical installers and system operators.

Nevertheless: All work on the inverter and the cabling of the PV array must be carried out by electrically qualified persons!

Especially activities are marked with the following warning in SMA publications of any kind:

DANGER! The tasks described below may only be performed by electrically qualified persons

may only be performed by electrically qualified and skilled persons.

Skilled persons must have the following qualifications:

  •  Knowledge of how an inverter works and is operated
  • (Knowledge of how batteries work and are operated)
  • Training in how to deal with the dangers and risks associated with installing, repairing and using electrical devices, (batteries) and installations
  • Training in the installation and commissioning of electrical devices and installations
  • Knowledge of all applicable laws, standards and directives
  • Knowledge of and compliance with the operating and installation manual of the inverter with all safety information

Always follow the IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS instructions provided with the SMA product owned i.e.:

CAUTION!
MAINTENANCE AND MODIFICATION

Only authorized personnel and qualified persons are permitted to repair or modify a PV installation.
To ensure personal safety, use only original spare parts available from the supplier.
CAUTION: Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, can result in minor or moderate injury.

WARNING!
RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK

This information is intended for use by qualified personnel only.
To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not perform any maintenance work other than that specified in a SMA manual unless you are qualified to do so.
WARNING: Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, can result in death or serious injury.

DANGER!
Before working on a inverter, disconnect it from the utility grid by means of the AC breaker and switch off PV using i.e. the integrated PV load-break switch (DC load-break switch).
Ensure that the inverter cannot be unintentionally reconnected. Use a voltage detector to ensure that the unit is disconnected and voltage free.
A inverter can still be charged with very high voltage at hazardous levels even when it is disconnected from utility grid and PV modules.
Wait at least five minutes after disconnection from the utility grid and PV modules before proceeding.
DANGER: Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.

WARNING!
LEAKAGE CURRENT HAZARD

Insufficient grounding of a inverter can lead to serious injuries or lethal injuries.
Ensure the correct grounding of the devices by a certified electrical installer.
Ensure that the DC installation is carried out correctly and no ground fault occurs during operation.
